What is Monalisa Touch® Vaginal Laser?
MonaLisa Touch is a fractional CO2 vaginal revitalization laser that helps women who suffer from vaginal dryness, vaginal burning, urinary incontinence and lack of nourishment and hydration in the vagina.
These symptoms come from the drop in estrogen that comes with menopause or during breastfeeding after delivery. MonaLisa Touch can help with the delicate and sensitive areas of the vagina in a safe and painless way.
If you suffer from pain during or after sex this could be because the skin in the vagina has become thin, fragile, decreased in elasticity and is dry and unlubricated. This can cause negative consequences in a couple’s relationship such as lack of sexual desire and uneasy feelings during intimate moments with your partner.
The MonaLisa Touch laser works by creating small painless lesions inside and outside the vagina that stimulates the production of collagen. Many patients report immediate and significant improvements after the first treatment.
From this new production of collagen the vagina now becomes more nourished and hydrated meaning the skin is now thicker, more toned and elastic. It also corrects the vaginal pH, which helps maintain the natural protective barrier and reduces the risk of vaginal infections.
The laser’s action reactivates and reestablishes the proper function of the relative urogenital structures while also improving the symptoms associated with urinary incontinence (leaking of urine).

Are the treatments painful?
Dr. Peña wants to make sure you are comfortable at the time of each treatment so a numbing anesthetic is applied to the outside of the vagina prior to each treatment. The most patients say they experience during the treatments is slight warmth. Once the treatment is done Dr. Peña applies a soothing cream to the outside vaginal area so once the anesthetic wears off you are still comfortable.
How many treatments will I need?
MonaLisa Touch uses a stacking method which means each laser treatment will penetrate deeper into the skin. You will have a total of 3 sessions every 5 weeks. Most patients report their symptoms improved after the 1st or 2nd treatment but the 3rd session is the most important since it is the deepest penetration and will give you the longest effect. After you complete your 3 treatment sessions, a refresher is recommended once a year.
Will I require any recovery time?
After each session you may experience some redness and swelling, we will provide you with an ice pack that you can apply to the area for the next few hours following the treatment. Dr. Peña recommends you apply a topical skin lotion to the area for a few days. You should refrain from sexual activity for 48 hours and should not submerge yourself in water for 2 days. Over the counter pain medication can also be taken if needed.
